Description: Saku Koivu was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the 1993 NHL entry draft, and quickly established himself as a dynamic force in the league. In 1999, Montreal honored Koivu by naming him the 27th captain in Canadiens history. He missed most of the 2001-02 season following a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but returned to the playoffs to help lead Montreal to a first-round upset of the top-seeded Boston. Following the season, Koivu was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which belongs to the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey."
Koivu entered the 2008-09 season ranked eight on Montreal's career assists list (with 416), and 13th in all-time Canadiens points (with 591).
